How to get the perfect gather

Have you ever looked at pictures and wonder how they got their gather to look so perfectly even? Did you think it must be some magic trick they used to get them all nicely put?

Fear not, as today I will be sharing how to get those nicely even gather for you all to know! I will be using the Boho babydoll in the dress length for kids to show how I gather my skirt.

First thing I do is sew the the bodice together and set it aside for later, then I sew the skirt front and back together.

I set my sewing machine stitch length as high as it can go, which is normally a 5, some machines have this option already presets but mines does not.

Now the next step everyone does differently but what is easier for me is to stitch the front only and then stitch the back. You will want to make two stitch line, one in the seam allowance and one 1/2 below the first line.

The reason you make two stitches is so that gathers hold on place and you can adjust to make it fit without the fabric folding. Now I grab the two bobbin strands from the back and pull them to gather.

I clip my side seams together from my bodice and skirt and then I pull the thread so that my skirt is the same width as my bodice.

Now I repeat for the back side of the skirt as well. Once I get it all gather to the correct length then I sew the bodice to my skirt and continue to finish my dress.

I hope this tutorial as help you and now you can make all the gather dress and top you want !!
