Uptown Joggers- Simple Hacks

March 15, 2023

We just love showing off simple ways to add even more options to our already full patterns!

On our new Uptown Joggers you can create a more straight leg, ankle length pant by simple leaving off the cuffs. Here are some our beautiful tester Joelle did just like this!

You can also use the cargo top tabs on the back pockets too! Here I am showing off this look with just one pocket and our gorgeous tester Teri did both sides in this style.  Simply add the top tab above the back pocket following the same instructions for the cargo pocket.  We both happen to use the shorts length, but you can of course do this hack with the pant length as well.

Have fun hacking along with us! Don’t forget to share your makes with us.

Notch Top & Dress- Easy Hacks

January 27, 2023

We love sharing some simple hacks to help extend the versatility of our patterns even more! Here are two for the new Notch Top & Dress we hope you enjoy.

ADDING LENGTH TO CROP::

Loving the new Notch Top & Dress, but which the crop option was just a bit longer? I got ya 😉 Here is a super quick and easy hack to make more of a top length than a shorter crop.

I only added about 1″ to mine, but you can add however much you’d prefer.  Remember though is it fitted to the natural waist where you are your smallest, so if you’re lengthening quite a bit you might also want to grade out to a bigger size at the bottom where you’re adding.  This way it wont be too tight on your high hips (if you’re going that long).

You’ll cut out the bodice just as you would normally.  I did the tank top option here, so no sleeves…but you would cut those and sew them the same as normal as well.

We will start making our hack changing by cutting out JUST the main fabric waistband pieces– adding the length you’d like.

Sew up the bodice per the tutorial as normal. When you get to the waistband we will just be stitching on the one layer.  Still add in that underbust elastic for adults.

Last, just hem up the bottom edge of the waistband.

Ta-da… so quick and simple! I love this everyday top and know it will be in high rotation! I can’t wait to see yours!

Want to see this hack being sewn up in action? Here is a quick video of it too!

MATERNITY ::

It can be somewhat challenging to find a great dress that works for maternity, but we’re here to show you a super simple change to the Notch Top & Dress that will give you a lovely maternity friendly dress.

Simple skip the waistband completely (don’t skip the elastic in that seam though) and add the missing length to your skirt pieces. Attach the skirt straight to the bodice pieces for an empire style dress perfect for a bump.

New Pattern Release :: Red Carpet Dress

November 23, 2022

Who doesn’t love to put something special on that makes you feel sultry and glamorous?!?! Whether you need more everyday dresses in your closet or you have an event coming up, the Red Carpet Dress will make you feel like a movie star!

This adult size pattern is for the full, newer size chart, extending from XXS – Plus 5X for the Adult Hourglass Figure.

  • *Want to learn more about how to measure yourself for these pattern?  We’ve got you covered with an in-depth blog HERE.  And for even more helpful fun, we have a free* printable that you can use to help record your measurements as you take them.
  • And in case you’re new to Patterns for Pirates and PDF patterns in general, we have a great blog full of new-user tips HERE to help you get started!
  • As with all of our current releases and updates, the pdfs now include our layers feature and can be found in Letter, A4, A0 and projector sizes.

Get ready to be feeling yourself in your new Red Carpet Dresses!

The Red Carpet Dress is a fitted silhouette throughout the bust, waist, and hip.  The mini, knee and midi length options are almost a true bodycon fit, but to allow walking room if you’re choosing not to add a slit, the pattern is slightly looser from the thigh, down.  The floor length options feature a stunning flared silhouette with a slight mermaid from thigh to floor.

There is an optional slit that can take you from adorable (with the tiny slit on the mini length) to dramatic (the leg-revealing options with the floor length skirts).  Beware that choosing any of the slitted versions means you won’t be able to keep yourself from constantly striking poses!

With the sleeve options available in the Red Carpet Dress, you can wear a dress from this pattern all year round!  Choose from thin straps (the only option if you’ve decided on the cowl necklines), short sleeve, or long sleeve.

Both sleeve options are gathered and add a little balance to the tight fit of the dress.

  • The short sleeve has a gathered ruffle hem, which gives it a little sweetness to the otherwise sexy look.
  • The long bishop sleeve gathers into a long cuff and gives a gorgeous and dramatic detail.

The square neckline gives a beautiful open neckline to show off those collarbones (and with thin straps bare those shoulders too). The cowl necklines are a timeless and elegant look, with a draped neckline that doesn’t go too deep, so you can wear this stunning dress to any event.

Worried about bust support?  Aren’t we all!

The Red Carpet Dress has a few options to add support.

  • There is a built in shelf bra in which you can go fully braless with support from if you choose a supportive fabric and add in cups.
  • You can also leave off the cups and use the shelf bra just as added support for your strapless bras.
  • The sleeved versions have a wide square neckline, so some “normal” everyday bras won’t show under.

Otherwise, a balconette or strapless bra with wider set straps would work lovely as well.  The low back option can even be worn with a low back strapless bra, or a backless bra with sticky wings (as the back comes out from the side seam for some coverage there).

The Red Carpet Dress is also fully lined, which gives this event dress such a luxurious feel!  All of the seams are hidden, providing for a gorgeous dress not only on the outside, but on the inside as well.  This does bump up this pattern to an intermediate level sew with the tutorial assuming you know some basics.  If you haven’t sewn a lot of garments yet, pick up some beginner level patterns before diving into this one.

The cowl neckline options call for a fabric with a soft drape, which typically means that you’ll be working with a thinner fabric in order to get the intended look and perfect cowl drape.  The additional layer of the lining in the Red Carpet Dress provides for coverage, between you and the world, even when using those thinner, slinkier fabrics.

Go ahead and make a casual knee length dress with statement sleeves for an everyday look.  Or be bold while wearing a floor length gown with a small train and thigh-high slit and knot ’em dead at your next formal event.  Whatever you do, make the dress you want and wear it to make yourself shine like the star you are!!

2022 Fall Sale and Grand Opening of Anchor Fabrics

October 7, 2022

I’m so excited to share the biggest announcement to hit the blog in a long time! Along with our Fall Sale this year and as we near hitting 150K Facebook members in our sewing group we’re also opening up a small fabric shop called Anchor Fabrics!

You might wonder why I’d ever try adding anything else to my overflowing plate? Me too… jkjkjk 😉 I absolutely love to share the love of sewing, especially helping those new to the art.  Katy and I started the monthly fabric subscription, Fabric for Pirates, 3 years ago now and have since been on the hunt for smaller wholesalers we could support through that.  I’ve been purchasing my own fabric samples from our wholesalers for a while now, which means you’ve been seeing these fabrics being used in many of our new pattern releases.

I get asked so often where my fabrics are from, and now I can pass along the support of a small wholesale business and give you the same fabrics I’m asked about at the same time!

We’ve started out with a small collection of beautiful fall inspired fabrics.  I will continue to order samples for pattern in testing and stock my favorites on the site along with pattern releases.  This way if you love a fabric I’ve sewn up and shared I will have it for you to purchase for yourself! How fun is that? I can’t wait to provide even more help for beginners trying to pair the perfect fabric to their patterns.

In each of the fabric listings, I have linked a few P4P patterns that will pair nicely with the fabrics.  This is such a useful tool for beginners, especially for those who are still working on figuring out which fabric goes with which patterns.  And of course you can always ask in either Facebook group.

Yep, there is another group now! If you’d like to join the Anchor Fabrics Facebook group, we’d love to have you!  Anchor Fabrics new group will be your new go-to place to share what you’ve made with your fabrics, no matter the designer or pattern!  It’s also a great way to ask questions about fabric pairing, color matching, or anything else you need advice or assistance on when it comes to our fabrics.

I’ve tried very hard to include ALLLL the important information about each fabric listed on the site for those who might not be acquainted with the different kinds of apparel fabrics.  I’ve showed close ups with the back and front (to show texture), draped over a maniquin (to show scale, drape and opacity), and flat fold with other available colors for thickness and color. I use two color correcting devices, natural lighting, and a simple background to make sure I’m representing the colors the best I can in the photos.

Each listing also includes a video showcasing that fabric, so you can see more than what a photo can sometimes capture.  Our goal is to help you become more confident in selecting and purchasing fabrics from us, so you can make all of your sewing dreams come true!  We want you to bring your apparel sewing visions to life with Anchor Fabrics, no matter if you’re a experienced sewist or just starting out on your sewing journey.

I also try to show the fabrics I thought matched well together on the site for you!

I love to be able to grab a matching rib knit for cuffs, neckbands, etc.  Sometimes it’s hard to know if a burgundy color in two different fabric bases will even match one-another.  That’s why I’ve try my best to show the fabric combinations that I think work really well together to help make that easier for you. No more guess work!

One of my favorite set-ups on the Anchor Fabrics website is that we are offering everything in 1/2 yard increments!  If you just need a little bit of that matching rib for cuffs you can grab just 1/2 yard instead of a full yard.  Or if you’re colorblocking your make… just grab 1/2 yards of each color!

You can also order continuous yardage in half yard increments as well… so those pesky Peg Legs that take JUST OVER one yard… you can now order 1.5yards rather than 2 full yards.  YES!!!!

With the Grand Opening of Anchor Fabrics, and the Fall Sale at Patterns for Pirates happening at the same time, now is your perfect chance to stock up of fabric and patterns for the upcoming holiday sewing, fall and winter weather, and just grab whatever you’ve been eyeing!  If you have seen a make of mine that you loved the fabric and would love for me to stock it on Anchor… let me know 🙂 I might just be able to do that!

Sale coupon codes will automatically pop up at the cart and you just CLICK TO APPLY 🙂 That way you don’t have to remember the codes! Don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletters so you never miss out of sales and releases.  We don’t send newsletters unless there is something new and worthy of an email, so no worries about us clogging up your email.  If you’re subscribed and never see those emails, make sure we are not being hidden into your junk or promotions folder to never be seen!

I hope you’re excited to venture into this new journey with me.  I’m hoping to make the sewing process more accessible and smoother for all those trying to learn the art of sewing and those who don’t have much time for their hobby they love.  I cannot wait to see what everyone makes with our patterns and fabrics!

Tie Up Top Easy Hacks

August 2, 2022

Tie Up Top Easy Hacks

Hood

I had a hard time narrowing down options for the Tie Up Top, like I always do when I’m drafting up a pattern! One option that I wanted, but just couldn’t squeeze in anymore into the pattern was a hood! I thought it would be so cute with the crop, long ties option! So, here I am to show off how to add a hood to it if you’re like me and think it’s an adorable combo.

Cut your Tie Up Top with the rounded/crew neckline. I used the hood from the Sporty Piko….bonus! Cut that out in the same size as your Tie Up Top is.

Next sew up the Tie Up Top completely following the tutorial, just leaving the neckline raw.  Sew up the hood as the Sporty Piko tutorial instructs up to the part that attaches to the neckline.

We will now follow the instructions on the Sporty Piko for attaching the hood.  Match the hood at the back centers.  Then continue pinning/clipping the hood to the neckline without stretching neckline or hood.  The notches on the hood should be close to the center front.  It might not be perfect since we’re using 2 different patterns, but it will be close! My size 7 matched up great.

Stitch the hood to the neckline.

Now…. if you’re like us… you’ll also need some matching pants and a bow to go with it 😉

Wear it tied in front

Or wrapped to the back and tied.

Either way, you have an amazing new hoodie! I hope I have time to make myself one in waffle knit soon too!

Diagonal Stripes Two Ways!

The center seam of the new Tie Top pattern makes it perfect for scrap-busting and playing with pattern placement! Here are two ways that I added a diagonal stripe detail to the front of my makes.

Colorblocking

I am fully committed to projector sewing at the moment, but this hack is easiest to accomplish with a printed pattern piece.

Start by printing and assembling (if necessary) your front bodice pattern piece of choice.

I wanted my colorblocking to begin just below the armscye. You may wish to carry yours higher. If so, the same steps apply!

I started by measuring the side seam. Mine was 12”. I divided in half and marked my pattern piece at this halfway point (6”). I also made a mark ½” from the bottom of the armscye and above the hemline to account for the seam allowance. I copied these marked positions on the opposite side of the pattern piece.

I then drew a diagonal line from the top outside mark to the inside center point. Repeat for the marks below.

Trace another line ¼” above and below your original lines. These represent your seam allowances and fold lines.

It’s time to cut your pieces! Fold up the first block at the #1 line indicated below. Repeat for the other two pieces, folding your pattern piece at the corresponding lines.

Sew in order, right sides together, with a ¼” seam allowance and top stitch. Isn’t your front bodice CUTE??!!

From this point, follow the assembly instructions that come with your pattern.

Striped Fabric

It’s very easy to achieve a diagonal detail with striped fabric. Just be careful about how you cut it. Rather than cutting two pieces at a time, I chose to cut one panel first, then the other. I wanted to make sure my stripes were as accurate as possible.

I have a clear ruler imprinted with angles and decided to use the 60° angle to line up my pattern piece. The angle of your diagonal lines is totally up to you – it’s most important that the sides mirror each other.

Cut your first panel, flip it over, line up your stripes, and cut out your second panel.

Assemble per the pattern instructions. I recommend pinning or clipping ever second or third stripe to keep it beautifully lined up as you sew.

Enjoy!

New Pattern Releases :: Vixen Bralette and Vixen Bikini & Thong

May 11, 2022

Get ready to sew up something to make you feel comfortable and cute at the same time! This double release with the Vixen Bralette and the Vixen Bikini & Thong make the perfect set for underwear and bralette or swimsuit! The options seem endless and they’re quick and fun to sew up too.

If you’re nervous to jump into undergarments or swim, both these tutorials are packed full with links to helpful blog posts and videos along the way! So whether you’re ready to lounge in a perfect cotton spandex set or ready to rock your set at the pool, the two new Vixen patterns are perfect for you!

The Vixen Bralette comes with both cross back (my personal favorite) and straight straps.  This cross back has the crossing section a bit lower than most, taking the strain off the neck and onto the stronger part of your upper back… can we say YESSSS comfort!! Still worried you wont like those cross straps? (Whispers…try it…) You can opt for the straight straps.  All options are fully lined with 1/4″ elastic in the seams giving natural support for the bust without that uncomfortable underwire. You can also choose to innerline the front pieces with powermesh or cups to add even more support.  Make a perfect fitting bralette or a bikini top with just different fabric choice.

The Vixen Bikini & Thong can give you a partially lined or fully lined bottom to match too.   Use a cotton spandex for undies or swim knit for a bikini bottom. The open sides give the illusion of legs for days for a flattering fit.The front still has you covered nicely and the back is a perfect cheeky look with just a little cheek sneaking out.

Both come with a few band options that are so much fun! You can finish with an exposed elastic for a sporty look, stretch lace trim for a beautiful look, short knit band for a gorgeous inside and out, or a tall knit band for more coverage.  If you use a knit band (and fully lined bottoms) you can create a FULLY REVERSIBLE item! How fun is that?  The knit band is the most challenging option though, so if you’re not an intermediate sewist with undergarments and swimsuits…try one of the other first 🙂

Sizes include: XXS – Plus 5X for the Adult Hourglass Figure.

But wait!  I also include a Small Bust and a Full Bust Adjusted pieces for the Vixen Bralette… what does that mean exactly? If your upper and full bust are one size away from each other, I’ve already done the bust adjustment for you.  PARTY TIME!

That means less time adjusting and more sewing time!

Both Vixen patterns are a tight fit that need high stretch knits with good recovery.  Not a lot of options for fabric choice on these one, a cotton spandex makes a perfect lounge set and swim knits make a gorgeous swimsuit option.  Other than that there aren’t many high stretch knits that are breathable with good recovery for undies… some rib knits might work.  You could use an athletic knit for a light support athletic/yoga bra top too.

*Want to learn more about how to measure yourself for these pattern?  We’ve got you covered with an in-depth blog HERE.  And for even more helpful fun, we have a free* printable that you can use to help record your measurements as you take them. New Pattern Release :: Modern Sweater

February 2, 2022

I’m celebrating my birthday today by sharing this brand new pattern with you! I hope you love it as much as we do! The Modern Sweater is the perfect balance of on trend details with classic looks that you can reach for years to come.  The neckline is a perfect relaxed crew neck with several options to finish it off. The entire sweater is finished with bands, making it a super quick and simple sew…. it’s very easy to make a big stack! The loose fit is a great medium between comfortable and cozy and still figure flattering. The length options mean you can pair it with any bottoms you’re loving at the moment.

The Modern Sweater is the perfect comination of modern looks with classic options too. You can choose from the on trend lantern sleeves or go with the traditional sleeves.  Pick from crop lengths that is all the rage right now with high waisted bottoms or go for the never out of style shirt length.  You can add on a short or tall waistband a get more variety on length as well.  The crop with tall waistband gives you more coverage while keeping the blouse at the flattering point in your figure…while adding it to the shirt length will give you more of a tunic length.  The neckline options can give you very different looks and can take you from fall into winter.  The neckline is slightly deeper and wider that a traditional crew neckline, which is comfortable and right on trend in todays shops.  The thicker neckband give it a super classic casual look.  The turtleneck going from that deeper neckline up the neck is such a cute look.  While you can’t get cozier than the fold over turtleneck for keeping warm. The options for the Modern Sweater include:

  • Neckband, Turtleneck, and Fold Over Turtleneck
  • Crop Length and Shirt Length
  • Short Waistband and Tall Waistband
  • Traditional Sleeves and Lantern Sleeves

New Pattern Release :: Kelli and Charli’s Dress

January 7, 2022

We’re starting of 2022 with a bang! The Kelli’s and Charli’s Dress pattern will have you feeling fabulous and glamorous throughout the year! When I put on the Kelli’s Dress I cannot help but strike a pose and smile… and I hope you feel the same when you put yours on! The Kelli’s and Charli’s Dresses have a beautiful gathered detail to the wasitline that gives a lovely and flattering line.  You can grab those thinner, dressier knits that aren’t stable enough for wiggles and galas and now have the perfect dress to use them on!

Named for one of my life long friends, Kelli’s Dress has a gorgeous gathering detail along the side seam from underbust to high hip creating a beautiful detail and flattering lines.  The cross over V neck is again a flattering open neckline, but with 4 way stretch fabrics, it can give you a lot of wiggle room to play with the neckline coverage.  Sleeve options will take you from summer to winter in a heart beat and the different lengths will take you from casual to a formal event easily.  The dramatic floor length with split is the most fun thing you’ll wear!  You cannot help but instantly feel glamourous and start striking poses.  Not wanting to show off all that leg? No problem, the floor length also has a no split option that is still stunning.  Shorter lengths are mini for a fun night out or knee for a perfect everyday look or cocktail in different fabrics. Kelli’s Dress is drafted for thin to medium stretch knits absolutely perfect for those stretchy glitter poly blends you find, double brushed poly, stretch lace, waffle knit, sweater knit, ribbed knits, light weight cotton spandex, and stretch velvet. The options for the Kelli’s Dress include:

  • Tank, Cap Sleeve, 3/4 Sleeve, and Long Sleeve

The freebies will always remain free and will always be there if you don’t want to save them to your own device/cloud/etc. What else did we do this year? How about some special events we held…

Or what Sew A Longs we put on?

You can find each Sew A Long on our blog and as a playlist on our YouTube Channel!

I always love to see what the most popular, previously released patterns are through the year as well! In order of popularity:

  • Gala Gown (Dec 2019),
  • Cocoon Cardigan (Jan 2017),
  • Naughty Nice PJS (Dec 2018)
  • Sweater Weather (Jan 2021)
  • Cozy Pants (Nov 2020)
  • Essential Tank (June 2016)

Our most popular freebies this year were: Peg Legs, Walk the Plank- Adult , and Peg Leg Add-ons.  Our most loved new freebie was the Fingerless Gloves.

Our blog is run mostly by the wonderful Alex- you know her from our Sew A Longs! But we also have a team of contributors who help up write up blogs… together we managed to put out 9 more P4P University blog posts…these are great beginner blogs answering the questions we see asked the most frequently in the P4P FB group! So, if you ever have a basic sewing question hop onto the P4P blog and use that search… we are working on having the answers for you!

P4P University added this year: Using a Projector for Sewing, Tips and Tricks for Sewing Curves, Color Blocking Tips, Adjusting for Height, Facings, Understitching and Topstitching, Adding Trims to Hems, and Interfacing 101 .  You can also find all the P4P University blogs rounded up in the FB Group Album!

Here are a few more highlights from the different Social Media outlets we use to keep you in the loop! If you follow me on each one you will notice I use them all slightly differently. I tend to share more selfies, in the moment/candid pictures and sneak peeks on my Instagram. I use the Facebook Group and Page to announce new patterns, sales, etc. I use the Blog to keep all details from everything from new patterns, sales, how tos, hacks, etc. The YouTube channel of course has all our videos from sew a longs, P4P universities, and tutorial videos as well.  I finally caved and joined TikTok for some reels.

Thank you to all the new followers, members, etc and for everyone who was here already and stayed with us! I appreciate each and every single one of the follows, members, subscribers, etc!

I’m excited to see what 2022 will bring for Patterns for Pirates as well- I wish you all a Happy New Year!
